In the North American English dub of Maple Town, each episode started and finished with a live-action segment hosted by a human hostess named Mrs. Maple.
Mrs. Maple was portrayed by Janice Adams; according to the IMDB, this show was her only acting credit. Not much is known about her, her background and where she is now.
Mrs. Maple would be shown inside a live-action kitchen set and she was implied to be the only human inhabitant of Maple Town. She'd talk about the characters and what was going to happen in today's episode, sometimes also relating a personal anecdote somehow tied into the story like her first day of school, when she tried to make a cake on her own, etc. We'd then look through her window which would cut to the episode. At the end of the episode, we'd return to Mrs. Maple's kitchen where'd she sum up the story and its moral (if there was one) and then say goodbye to the viewers before going to the end credits. Some of the later episodes had Mrs. Maple with a much shorter introduction, just introducing the episode rather than the longer ones in the beginning.
From what I know, Mrs. Maple only appeared in the USA/Canada dubs of Maple Town; she was not in any other version. I wonder why she was added to the Northern American English version of Maple Town. I do plan to mention this on my blog when it goes live on June 10.
There's one final interesting note in this puzzles surrounding Maple Town in the USA - someone years ago contacted me on YouTube and claims to have seen the remaining dubbed episodes of Maple Town in Canada; this user claims the segments with Mrs. Maple were not in these last episodes and said episodes never made it to broadcast in the USA. If this is true, this may prove that indeed all 52 episodes of Maple Town were dubbed for the American market. But that is a whole other post for a whole other day.
