I'm trying to work up the commentary for Maple Town episode 4, the English dub title being "The Greatest Treasure of All". The first two episodes of Maple Town were essentially "welcome" episodes. They introduced Patty Rabbit and her family, Bobby Bear, Wilde Wolf, Sheriff Barney Bulldog and the townspeople. Going on, the next couple of episodes focus more on the families of Maple Town. Episode 3 dealt with Bobby and his family, episode 4 on the Mole family, episode 5 on the Mouse/Rat family, etc. Maple Town episode 4 focuses on the Mole family. The problem is that Mikey Mole wants to look for treasure rather than help his family do their digging work. To be honest, I think this episode is weaker than the first three. Mikey Mole comes off as being more selfish in wanting to find treasure; while Bobby Bear wanted to avoid responsibility in the previous episode, he still went through a big adventure to recover the silver spoons from Wilde Wolf. I could also never get over how the original version shows Mikey Mole being slapped by his father for staying out after being told not to. So any thoughts on this episode? What do you think of the plot? What are your thoughts on Mikey Mole?

I like this episode. There is something cozy and pleasantly childlike about following an old treasure map, hoping to find buried treasure. The slapping scene of course always put a bad taste in my mouth. It's the first instance of corporal punishment in the anime and there will be more later. Parents slapping their children seems to be a pretty common trope in Japanese media, used for dramatic effect. I really hope they stop using it.
If I remember correctly, the reason Mihai/Mikey wanted to find a treasure was so he could treat his family to a vacation since they had been working so hard. But maybe this was changed in the English version? I don't remember him doing anything significant after this episode, except being around occasionally. He and Bobby tagged along with Patty and Ann when they were visiting their grandparents in Coconut Town. Which seems like an odd choice. But hey I guess they wanted to use him for something more.

In the English dub, the beachfront resort town where Patty's grandparents live is called "Palm Tree Town". I wonder why they went with that name, especially considering how similar it sounds to the sequel setting Palm Town. I always thought that Mikey Mole was a strange choice to join Patty, her siblings and Bobby on that trip.

I wonder if they came up with that name before they were aware of Palm Town, or if they were planning to call Palm Town something different.

speaking of the resort and there being more corporal punishment after episode 4, in episode 27 (the resort episode), pattys older sister Rachel has gone with them to the resort and act a bit to strict cause she took her moms words of "having to be the mother while shes not there" a bit too far. eventually patty gets fed up and tells Rachel off, and is immediately spanked by Rachel. though its just a single slap, its enough to make patty mad and tell her off more saying rachel "isnt her mom" and runs off upset. i know of that scene, and a scene in palm town where rolley (pattys friend) is spanked by her mom in episode 13. i dont know what there saying so i have no idea why rolley is being spanked. the only reason i know of whats being said in the maple town spanking is because surprisingly, the spanking scene in maple town wasnt cut from the dub version, so i know what there saying cause of that. if there are anymore corporal punishment scenes (mainly spankings) in either show other then theses 2, please let me know. thanks
