I've never been certain just how many English-dubbed episodes of Maple Town there are, but my research generally agrees on two things: we didn't get even close to all of them, and a lot of the localization choices were...questionable, to say the least ("Fannie Fox"? Seriously?).
On occasion, over the past few years, I've ruminated over what would be the perfect English dub cast, in the highly unlikely event someone else picked the show up and gave it a decent treatment. At this point, the odds are, incredibly enough, slightly worse than those of us seeing a U.S. release of Xenoblade or Ace Attorney Investigations 2, but a Drive-Thru Whale can dream, right?
Two things I'm certain about: Kari Wahlgren as Patty, and Melissa Charles as Rolley. Yes, I know that's Palm Town I'm talking about, but her voice as Ed (still a girl) on Cowboy Bebop is just perfect.
Bobby is a hard pick. I don't remember what Susan Roman sounded like as Bobby (my own firsthand memories of the English dub are pretty much nonexistent ^_^, but I have a fundamental issue with it: Yoku Shioya gives Bobby a surprisingly deep male voice, and the usual "woman doing a young boy's voice" you hear in anime dubs (Naruto is a good example) hardly matches. This said, he's hard to cast. Johnny Yong Bosch or Yuri Lowenthal would be the obvious picks, though neither one quite fits; I'd settled on Steve Cannon for a while, but now I'm wondering how Troy Baker would sound in the role. Or Steve Blum, just for kicks.
Dave Wittenberg as Johnny. (Probably not exclusively Johnny. The guy's got range. Same with Kari Wahlgren, come to think of it. Both of them could voice two or three characters and you probably wouldn't notice unless you paid really close attention.)
Mehhh...it's been so long since I gave this any serious thought. It's an impossible dream, I know, but hey: impossible things do happen from time to time, right? :3
