I was bidding but had to abandon ... too poor ... the MIB badger fam went for $51 ! I couldn't believe it. (I bet the woman selling couldn't believe it either. She didn't seem to know, from her description, that they were highly collectible.)

I wonder who it could be... Yes. I desperately wanted these. The tanuki family (or badgers as Tonka called them) are among my biggest favorites on the show! (I wish there had been more effort to make them look like their animated counterparts, but they're recognizable enough) I don't think this is too terribly expensive. This family is rare like heck, released late in the line and only in the US to boot (don't confuse them with the Raccoon family who are very common). Add the fact that they're still in the box, and I think I got a pretty good deal. I'm still totally going to take them out of the box though. 8)

Just so we're on the same page here, we're talking Giulietta and her family, right?

i wanted them too sniff. Next one is yours! Just so we're on the same page here, we're talking Giulietta and her family, right? Yup, this is the auction in question: www.ebay.com/itm/180803490893Even though Giulietta and her family were there in the cartoon since the beginning, and were among the first families to be introduced, no figures were made of them in Japan. I'm glad Tonka stepped in and tried to right this wrong. They took the Raccoon family, changed the markings of their faces (which works fine, but I wish they hade given them brown bodies) and gave them new outfits. Father Enrico's outfit is a re-color of Archimedes Otter's, Mother Gianna's dress is blue version of Bobby's mama's, Giulietta is wearing pretty much the same dress as Arthur's mama (Mrs. Mouse), and her brother's (whoever of them it is supposed to be) is from Bobby's little brother but with green pants. But it's at least close enough to see who they are supposed to be. I'm guessing Giulietta was called "Betty" in the Saban dub also?

The alliteration pretty much confirms it. I'm fairly sure the UK got its own set of names: characters kept their first names, unlike the US, but their surnames were changed to appropriate English species references (e.g. Diana Konderik -> Diana Foxie). Don't remember where I saw this, though.

I am guessing the reason for the change in animal was to make something that american kids would recognize ... while badgers don't exist in america as far as I know, we would still know what they were, whereas we may not have had a clue what a tanuki was ...
Meanwhile, as a human being, I sometimes find it insulting the way companies dumb things down for kids ... Kids are a lot smarter and more curious than many adults seem to appreciate.
Like, why did they change the Harry Potter books to be 'American English' for the American market? Why not include a glossary in the back and let kids enjoy learning some fun British words???

I'm fairly sure the UK got its own set of names: characters kept their first names, unlike the US, but their surnames were changed to appropriate English species references (e.g. Diana Konderik -> Diana Foxie). Don't remember where I saw this, though. Oh no no, the Bandai Europe toyline adopts ALL the character names from the Tonka toyline (alliteration and all), and the UK got the Saban English dub as well. However, most countries in which the cartoon was dubbed, the Japanese names were kept or only slightly modified (I never knew Diana Konderick by any other name until I got online). The exception to this is the French dub, which decided to use the names from the toyline, even though it was dubbed from the Japanese version (so Judy would be "Suzie L'Ecureuil"). I remember "Diana Foxie" being written on a Japanese site as the character's English name, but that was most likely made up by the owner of that site. Alliterated names were probably chosen because Tonka thought it would make it easier for kids to remember them (if the character is a fox, you will atleast know the name begins with an F). Doesn't make the adapted names suck any less though. (although I kind of like "Frederic" and "Florence" for Diana's parents) I am guessing the reason for the change in animal was to make something that american kids would recognize ... while badgers don't exist in america as far as I know, we would still know what they were, whereas we may not have had a clue what a tanuki was ... Tanuki are often called "raccoons" in translations (even though the correct term is "racoon dog"), but there was already a raccoon family, so badger was probably the best they could come up with. Not a big fan of dumbing things down either. Saban even went to the amazing length of creating a whole live action segment, just so "Mrs. Maple" could explain the values and morals kids were supposed to pick up from the show, because the Japanese version was too subtle about it.

I don't know how many episodes got dubbed, but I do remember hearing that they got rid of Mrs. Maple after a while.
