I'll admit, I always was strangely under the assumption that it took place in Europe, mostly due to the surnames. Though only now did I notice that when Bobby imagines a wanted poster for Drake, it has an American $ sign on it.
...There's also the issue of the Konderick family's car, which has the drivers seat on the right-hand side like in Europe/Japan.

Whenever currency is mentioned in the series, it's always dollars. However, every car shown in Maple Town is right-side drive, while every car shown in Palm Town is left-side drive (there are a lot more cars in Palm Town though).
A popular theory among Japanese fans is that Maple Town is in Canada, while Palm Town is in the US (perhaps California or Florida?). It would make sense as Palm Town is refered to as "the land of the south". I can't remember that I've seen it stated in any production material, but since this book says that "North America is the home of Maple Town", it gives that theory even more credibility.

Why would Palm Town be the US if they show people driving on the left side?
We drive on the right side so Palm Town has to be somewhere else.

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. What I meant to say was that the steering wheels are on the LEFT side of the cars, but the cars drive on the right side of the road in Palm Town.
In Maple Town they mostly seem to be driving in the middle of the road (but the Kondericks are probably the only family in town to own a car). I just realized that Patty's grandparents' car had the steering wheel on the left side, but every other car in the series (I think we saw a total of four cars?) has it on the right side, I wonder if that is meant to suggest that the grandparents are from overseas (they live in Coconut Town), or that the animation staff just didn't pay much attention to it.

Yes, I searched for it for a long time. It's too bad they didn't make one for Palm Town (but then again, Palm Town didn't have many figures to show).

I love these pictures, it's a shame there is not another book like that of Palm Town. Regarding the location of Palm Town, I always thought it was in the United States or Canada, because I love maple syrup and there are no large forests of maple trees.

There is a picture book of Palm Town that uses toy photos though, but it's not as awesome as this, and doesn't have all the Palm Town figures and playsets in it.
People who worked on the show have confirmed that the settings in Maple Town were meant to evoke the image of Canada. Haven't heard anything about Palm Town, but yeah, "the land in the south" as the theme song says. =)
