Still awaiting the final boxset to complete the collection, but I thought that it was about time I posted something about these for those that are wondering about them.
"Maple Town Story Part 2" was released on 2013/10/30 and contains the remaining episodes of the first season (27-52). "New Maple Town Story: The Palm Tow Chapter Part 1" came out on 2013/11/27 and contains the first 22 episodes of the Palm Town season.
I did a quick review of the first Maple Town boxset when it came out, and everything I said about it can be said for these two as well. There's not much new to report (except that MT Part 2 has even WORSE boxart, while PT Part 1 looks pretty good) The biggest and best surprise, was that the second Maple Town set included the Maple Town movie (meaning I should upgrade that fansub I did of it ). It also included a trailer for said movie, and that was it for bonus features. No creditless opening or ending, which was really too bad.
Palm Town Part 1 is like the first first Maple Town set, in that the only bonus feature is a trailer for the premiere episode. Although this one features various versions of the same trailer (30 sec, 15 sec, and "local" version without the airing time displayed in it. Not too exciting)!
I was kind of hoping that since the Palm Town set has fewer episodes, we might get a bit more bonus features, but nope. I predict that Palm Town part 2 will have the Movie re-edit of episode 1, and that will be it. Oh well. At least we got the complete Palm Town series on DVD, which I wouldn't even had hoped to dream of just a couple of months back!
Both sets come with a little booklet, just like the first one, showing production material such as models sheets, scripts and storyboards (in addition to episode summaries). These are very interesting, but for sure leave you hunger for more! Here are two examples:
I wholeheartedly recommend these DVDs to any Maple fan who is able to buy them. They are expensive, but as far as Japanese DVDs go, it's not too bad (and Amazon.co.jp is still offering 20%-25% off on all boxsets!). I hope they sell well, and maybe lead to more Maple Town releases down the road (soundtrack?).
